There are different denture repair solutions for every patient’s situation. In some cases, it only needs to be adjusted while some instances may call for a denture replacement altogether.
Denture Replacement
Denture replacement refers to replacing the prosthesis with a new one. This is typically done if they are old or worn out. Dentures are typically replaced every 7-10 years depending on each patient’s lifestyle. Some signs that tell you when you need replacement are loose dentures, speech difficulties, discomfort, and/or damaged/discolored. These signs aren’t guaranteed symptoms but something to look out for. Sometimes all you need are either denture reline, rebase, or adjustment, or a combination of the given dental solutions.
Denture Reline
A procedure that provides a new fit for you and your denture without the need of replacing them. A relining is done if the patient experiences discomfort. This procedure reduces a small amount of the plate and applies soft or hard resin. After this procedure, you will be asked to bite onto the denture to mold the resin into place.
There are different kinds of reline procedures which are the following:
- Hard Relining - The standard relining process. Uses hard resin which is more durable compared to soft resin. Hard resin doesn’t feel uncomfortable but can cause irritation and discomfort with sensitive gums.
- Soft Relining - The relining process that’s more common in people with sensitive gums. Soft resin is less durable than hard resin but is much more suitable for sensitive gums.
Denture Rebase
Unlike relining where you only replace the surface of the denture that touches gum tissue, rebase replaces the whole material that the artificial teeth are attached to. This is done if there is significant damage to the plate or if the plate is worn out. Dentists choose rebasing over relining when the artificial teeth are still in good condition.
Denture Adjustment
This procedure molds your denture into another desired format by adjusting it. Adjustments are typically used to improve comfort and make them fit better in your mouth. These are usually done regularly since prolonged use affects the gums. By adjusting, the discomfort caused by this effect will be reduced.
